DAILYJILI Bookmaker: How Prices, Margins and Bet Types Work
A bookmaker is the business that sets a price on an outcome, takes your bet at that price and keeps a built-in margin whichever side wins.

A bookmaker takes bets on the result of a contest at a price it chooses, and keeps a margin in that price. Everything else about sports betting, from a point spread to a quinella, is a different way of asking what you are predicting. This page explains the job, the margin and the common bet types in plain words, and sends you to a page for each one.
Bookmaker meaning in plain words
There is no statute or regulator definition of the word that this site could find, so what follows is customary usage rather than a quoted rule. A bookmaker is a business, or in older usage a person, that publishes odds on an outcome and accepts wagers at those odds. The name comes from the book in which the bets were once written down.
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council publishes a glossary that uses a related word. It defines an oddsmaker as the person who calculates or predicts the outcome of a contest and sets the betting odds, and says the oddsmaker “sets the price”. That wording is the Tennessee regulator’s own, and it applies to that state’s licensed online sportsbooks.
Three jobs sit inside the word.
- Quote a price on each possible outcome of an event.
- Take your bet at a price and record it.
- Settle the bet when the result is official and pay the winners.
How a bookmaker prices a market
A market is one question with a short list of answers, such as which team wins or whether the score goes over a number. The bookmaker puts a price on every answer and makes the prices add up to a little more than certainty. That surplus is the margin, and it is how the business is paid.
The Tennessee glossary shows the idea with a single sentence: if a bettor wagered 110 to win 100, the 10 difference is the vigorish, or vig. Here is that example worked in full, as arithmetic with round numbers, using pesos for the unit.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Stake on side one | PHP 110 to win PHP 100 | Return if it wins: PHP 210 |
| Stake on side two | PHP 110 to win PHP 100 | Return if it wins: PHP 210 |
| Total staked by two bettors | 110 + 110 | PHP 220 |
| Paid out to the one winner | 100 profit + 110 stake back | PHP 210 |
| Kept by the bookmaker | 220 minus 210 | PHP 10 |
The figures are an illustration of the mechanism, not a quote from any operator. The same margin is why a coin-flip market is not priced at even money on both sides: each side asks you to risk more than you can win. A bookmaker that draws equal stakes on both sides keeps the PHP 10 whichever side wins.
What moves a price
Odds change after they are first quoted. The glossary notes that odds are typically set from a mix of outside oddsmakers, other sportsbooks’ posted odds and the operator’s own management. In practice that means a price can shift when heavy money arrives on one side, when a player is ruled out, or when another bookmaker moves first.
What the common bet types ask you to predict
Each bet type is a different question about the same contest. The definitions below follow the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council’s glossary, quoted as that regulator’s wording and not as a rule in the Philippines.
| Bet type | What it asks | Regulator’s wording, shortened |
|---|---|---|
| Point spread | By how many points does the favourite win? | The predicted scoring differential between two teams or people |
| Money line | Who wins outright? | A wager on the outcome outright, with fixed odds |
| Over/under (total) | Is the combined score above or below a number? | A bet on whether the aggregate score will be over or under a particular number |
| Parlay | Do all of these bets win? | One wager that joins two or more bets for a higher payout if every one wins |
| Teaser | Do all of these bets win, with kinder lines? | Spreads adjusted in the player’s favour, lower returns, every selection must win |
Racing bets ask a different thing again: not who wins a head-to-head, but which horses fill which finishing places, and the payout comes from a shared pool. Those are covered on the racing pages below.
The sports pages on this site, one by one
The seven pages below each take one question out of this list. Read them in any order.
| Page | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| NBA betting odds | How to read a spread, a money line and a total on a basketball game |
| Totals betting | How an over/under settles when the score lands on the line |
| Middling | What has to happen to two lines for both bets to win |
| Karera | How horse betting works in the Philippines and who regulates the races |
| Trifecta | How a trifecta is picked and how its payout is worked out |
| Horse racing | Who runs racing in the Philippines and which bets are offered |
| Quinella | What a quinella is and how it differs from an exacta |
Basketball prices
The page on how NBA betting odds are read works one invented game through the spread, the money line and the total, and shows how to turn a price into a percentage. It uses Team A and Team B throughout, so no number on it is a real line.
Over and under
Totals betting and the push covers the one question beginners trip on: what happens to your bet when the final score equals the number. The answer depends on whether the number has a half point.
Two bets, one window
The page on how middling works in practice shows four worked examples of a middle, including the one where both of your bets lose.
Horse racing
Karera betting in the Philippines and horse racing in the Philippines cover the local side: who supervises racing and which bets exist. Two bets are given their own pages, the trifecta bet explained and what a quinella pays on, because their payouts come from a pool rather than from a quoted price.
Fixed odds against a pool
A bookmaker quoting a price is one of two ways a bet is paid. The other is the pari-mutuel pool, used for horse racing, where everyone’s stakes go into one pot, the operator takes a share, and the rest is divided among the winning tickets. This is customary description, and the two racing pages cite Philracom and the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the bet definitions.
| Fixed odds with a bookmaker | Pari-mutuel pool | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the price | The bookmaker | Nobody; it falls out of the stakes |
| When you know the payout | When you place the bet | After betting closes |
| Where the margin sits | In the gap between side prices | In the share taken before paying out |
| Typical example here | Spread, money line, total | Trifecta, quinella |
Where DAILYJILI’s Sports tab fits
This site is a player-side reference and is not the operator. On 6 October 2026 the DAILYJILI lobby’s home page showed five tabs under Hot Games, in this order: Slots, Fish, Live, Poker, Sports, and Sports is also an entry in the side menu under Game center. The Sports vendor filter listed two vendors.
This page quotes no price, limit or market count for DAILYJILI, because none was printed where it could be read without an account. The live figures are on the bet slip after you log in. For the wider picture of the lobby, the DAILYJILI casino overview is the place to start.
To check a price yourself, do this in order.
- Log in and open the Sports tab.
- Pick a market and add it to the bet slip without confirming.
- Read the price on each side of the same market and work out the margin as shown above.
- Read the stake limit and any settlement note on the slip.
- Confirm only if you are content with all four.
Staying in control while you read prices
A price tells you what a bet pays, not what it is likely to cost you over a season. The margin is a fixed feature of every market, so more bets means more margin paid. Three habits keep it that way.
- Decide a stake you could lose without a problem before you open the slip.
- Decide a stopping time and keep to it.
- Never raise a stake to win back a loss.
If betting has stopped being a pastime, gambling help in the Philippines lists where to turn, and the responsible gaming page sets out this site’s own guidance. This site states 21+ for everything it describes.
FAQ
What is the meaning of bookmaker?
In customary usage a bookmaker is a person or business that quotes odds on the result of a contest and accepts bets at those odds. The word is older than the internet and is used for both a shop and an online operator. The Tennessee regulator's glossary uses the word oddsmaker for the person who sets the price.
Where does a bookmaker make its money?
From the gap between the prices on the two sides of a market. The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council glossary shows it with a bettor who stakes 110 to win 100: the 10 difference is the vig. A bookmaker that attracts equal money on both sides keeps that margin whichever side wins.
Is a bookmaker the same as a sportsbook?
Usually yes in everyday speech, and this site treats them as the same thing. Some writers keep sportsbook for the betting product and bookmaker for the business behind it. Neither word says anything about whether a given operator is licensed, which you check separately.
Does a bookmaker know who will win?
No. It estimates, and then moves the price when money arrives or when news changes the picture. A price is an opinion plus a margin, which is why two bookmakers can quote different numbers on the same event.
How is a bookmaker different from a horse-racing pool?
With a bookmaker the price is quoted to you and, in the usual fixed-odds arrangement, stays with your bet. In a pari-mutuel pool the money is shared among the winning tickets, so the payout is only known once betting closes. The racing pages linked from this one cover the pool side.
What does DAILYJILI's Sports tab show before I log in?
On 6 October 2026 the lobby's home page listed Sports as one of five tabs, and the Sports vendor filter showed two vendors. Prices, markets and limits appear on the bet slip after you log in, so read them there rather than on any page of this site.
