  2. How many results a trifecta has to cover
  3. Working out a trifecta payout from the pool
  4. Why the payout is only known after betting closes

A trifecta is a pari-mutuel bet on one race that asks for three finishers: first, second and third, in that exact order. Philracom’s own bet table prints it as Trifecta, code TRI, with a minimum bet of P 2.00. The payout is not a price you take at the counter; it comes out of the pool after the race, and the sections below show the sum. For the fixed-price alternative, see how a bookmaker quotes odds against you.

How the trifecta compares with its neighbours

Philracom lists the trifecta among its longer combinations, and the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) defines its own relatives in its horse racing betting guide. Put side by side, the difference is how many horses you name and whether order counts.

BetName used byWhat must happenOrder counts
WinPhilracomYour horse finishes firstNot applicable
ForecastPhilracomFirst and second placedYes
TrifectaPhilracomFirst, second and third placedYes
QuartetPhilracomFirst to fourth placedYes
TrioHKJCFirst three, any orderNo
TierceHKJCFirst three, correct orderYes

Philracom’s table sets the Trifecta minimum at P 2.00, against P 5.00 for Forecast, so the longer bet allows a smaller ticket. A related two-horse page, the quinella and its exact-order cousin, covers the two-horse step down.

How many results a trifecta has to cover

Order is what makes a trifecta hard. In a field of 10 horses, the number of possible first-second-third results is 10 x 9 x 8 = 720. A trio, where order does not count, groups those into 120 combinations (720 divided by the 6 ways to order any three horses).

Here is how the count grows with field size, as plain arithmetic:

Horses in the raceTrifecta results (n x (n-1) x (n-2))Trio combinations
612020
833656
10720120
121,320220

More possible results means any one result is usually held by fewer tickets, and that is the whole reason an exact-order bet can pay more.

Working out a trifecta payout from the pool

The dividend is the returned share of the pool divided by the number of winning units. Republic Act 8407 (the Manila Jockey Club franchise) and Republic Act 11649 (the Hapi Jockey Club franchise) both name the trifecta in the clause that sets aside 82% of the total wager funds as dividends. Use that figure for the sum, with a pool of round numbers chosen as an example:

  1. Pool: 50,000 units of P 2 each, so P 100,000 in total.
  2. Returned to winners at 82%: P 82,000.
  3. Divide by the winning units. If 20 units hold the exact first-second-third order: P 82,000 / 20 = P 4,100 per P 2 unit.
  4. Tax and breakage then come off. RA 8407 states a 4% tax on trifecta winnings, deducted by the operator before payment.

Changing the number of winning units shows why the dividend moves:

Winning units (example)Dividend per P 2 unit
1P 82,000
20P 4,100
100P 820
500P 164

Why the payout is only known after betting closes

Every ticket added to the pool changes the maths, including tickets on your own combination. Three things can move your dividend after you buy:

  1. More money enters the pool before the race starts.
  2. More tickets land on the same first-second-third order.
  3. Tax and breakage are taken off before you are paid.

That is the opposite of a bookmaker’s price, which is fixed when your bet is accepted.

Always take the percentages from the club’s own franchise and the ticket terms displayed at the track, as RA 8407 and RA 11649 both require the franchise holder to display betting terms prominently. Where the track lies, and who licenses it, is set out in horse racing in the Philippines.

FAQ

What does a trifecta bet mean?

You pick three horses and the order they will finish in one designated race. Philracom's table defines it as the first, second and third place finishers in exact or correct order of arrival.

What is the minimum trifecta bet in the Philippines?

Philracom's bet table lists P 2.00 for the Trifecta (TRI). That is Philracom's figure; the ticket board at the track you use shows what that meeting sells.

Is a trifecta the same as a trio?

No. The Hong Kong Jockey Club's trio takes the first three in any order, and its tierce takes them in correct order. The tierce is the nearest match to a trifecta, but each club's rules govern its own pool.

How is a trifecta dividend worked out?

The share of the pool that the law returns is divided by the number of winning units. Fewer winning tickets mean a bigger dividend per unit.

Ilan ang puwedeng kombinasyon sa trifecta?

Sa 10 kabayo, 720 ang posibleng resulta (10 x 9 x 8), kaya mas mahirap itong tamaan kaysa sa Win.
