DAILYJILI Totals Betting: How Over/Under Bets Settle
Totals betting is a wager on whether the combined score of a game finishes over or under a number the bookmaker sets.

Totals betting asks you to forecast the sum of the scores, not the winner. A bookmaker names a number, and you take over or under it. This page shows how a total is read, how it settles on a half point and on a whole number, and what a typical total points market looks like, using invented games only.
How totals betting works
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council defines an over/under, or total, as a bet on whether the aggregate score of a game will be over or under a particular number of points. That is the regulator’s wording for its own state’s sportsbooks, and it is the nearest saved definition. Everything below the definition is customary usage and arithmetic.
Take an invented game with a total of 214.5. You bet Over if you expect both teams together to score 215 or more, and Under if you expect 214 or fewer. The score of each team is added, and the winner of the game is irrelevant.
| Final score | Combined | Over 214.5 | Under 214.5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 108 to 101 | 209 | Loses | Wins |
| 112 to 103 | 215 | Wins | Loses |
| 120 to 98 | 218 | Wins | Loses |
Total points: where the number comes from
The glossary says odds are typically set from a mix of third-party oddsmakers, other sportsbooks’ posted odds and the operator’s own management. So a total is the bookmaker’s estimate of the sum, nudged by money. When many bettors back Over, the number can rise to 215.5.
The words total points and total are used for the same market in everyday speech. Both name the number the two sides’ scores are added to.
| Line | Direction of the move | Over wins at |
|---|---|---|
| 214.5 | Opening | 215 or more |
| 215.5 | Raised after heavy Over money | 216 or more |
| The price on each side is separate, so Over and Under at 214.5 may carry different prices. |
What happens when the score lands on the line
Half-point lines cannot tie. A whole-number line can, and then the customary result is a push: the bet is cancelled and the stake returned. A bookmaker’s own house rules decide, so the bet slip’s settlement note is the final word.
Here is an invented game with a total of 215 exactly, and a stake of PHP 100 each way, with prices of 110 to win 100 as in the glossary’s vig example.
- Final combined score 218: Over wins and returns PHP 100 profit plus the PHP 110 stake.
- Final combined score 212: Under wins on the same terms.
- Final combined score exactly 215: both bets are pushed and PHP 110 comes back untouched.
Settling a total in a shortened game
A game that is stopped early, postponed or cancelled may leave a total unsettled. The glossary defines a cancelled wager as one that was legal when placed but can no longer be determined under the sportsbook’s house rules. Read those rules before staking, since they say whether overtime counts and what happens to a stopped game.
- Find the settlement note on the bet slip.
- Look for the words overtime, abandoned and postponed.
- If the note is silent, ask customer service in the chat before you stake.
Using totals alongside other markets
A total sits next to the spread and the moneyline on a basketball board; how NBA betting odds are read works all three through one game. Bet totals at two different numbers and a window can open where both win, which middling in plain worked examples explains. Horse racing has no total at all: its bets pay from a pool, as karera betting in the Philippines describes.
| Market | Settled by |
|---|---|
| Total on a basketball game | Sum of both scores against a number |
| Spread | Margin against a handicap |
| Racing pool bet | Finishing order and pool share |
The DAILYJILI lobby has a Sports tab with two vendors in its filter; prices, limits and settlement notes are on its bet slip after login, and this page quotes none of them.
FAQ
What is totals betting?
It is a bet on the combined score of both sides, not on who wins. The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council's glossary calls it an over/under, or total: a bet on whether the aggregate score will be over or under a particular number of points.
What happens if the total lands exactly on the line?
On a whole-number line the customary result is a push and the stake is returned, though a bookmaker's own rules decide. With a half-point line such as 214.5 the score can never land on it, so there is always a winner.
Do total points include overtime?
That is set by the bookmaker's own settlement rules, and the rules differ. Read the settlement note on the bet slip before you stake, because this site cannot tell you how a given operator settles it.
Is a total the same as a spread?
No. A spread bet depends on the margin between the two teams, while a total depends on the sum. A game can be a blowout and still go under.
Where can I see a real total for a game?
Only on a bookmaker's own bet slip. This page shows invented totals so that the settlement is clear, and it carries no live lines, tips or picks.
