Pusta is Tagalog for a bet or stake; the KWF dictionary glosses it as taya.

- DAILYJILI Parehas Explained
- In a licensed cockpit, parehas is an even call: both sides put up the same amount, so whoever wins collects what they staked, less the bet taker's commission.
Since 2022, e-sabong operations have been suspended nationwide under Executive Order No. 9, signed by President Marcos Jr. on 28 December 2022.
That makes pusta a word for the licensed cockpit only. In Tagalog it means a bet or a stake, and the rest of this page shows how the word is used where the law still permits cockfights.
What pusta means in Tagalog
The KWF online dictionary (diksiyonaryo.ph) gives pusta as a noun, traces it to Spanish posta and apuesto, and defines it with one word: taya. Taya is the ordinary word for a stake or a wager. The same dictionary describes sabong as a fight between cocks fitted with a tari, usually with a pustahan, which is the betting around the fight.
| Word | Plain meaning | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pusta | A bet or stake | KWF entry, glossed as taya |
| Pustahan | The betting around a fight | KWF entry for sabong |
| Dehado | The side with the smaller pusta | KWF entry, sense 1 |
| Center bet (parada) | A bet laid on one fight through the pit manager | published derby rules |
How a pusta is handled in a licensed cockpit
The decree that governs cockpits sets out who handles stakes, and the order is plain. This is what Presidential Decree 449, section 4, and the derby rules describe.
- A bettor, defined in section 4(f) as a person who bets money or other things of value on the fight, lays a pusta with another bettor or through the bet taker.
- The bet taker or promoter calls and takes care of the bets from both birds’ owners and from other bettors.
- Only after that does the bet taker order the fight to begin, which is the moment covered on the page about when the larga call is made.
- After the referee announces the result, the bet taker distributes the won bets to the winners, after deducting a certain commission.
Section 7 requires bet takers to hold a licence that is renewed every year in their birth month, and it limits them to officiating in cockfights the decree authorizes.
An example of a pusta honoured
The amounts are a round-number example for arithmetic only. Suppose one bettor lays a pusta of ₱200 on one bird and another lays ₱200 on the other. The total in play is ₱400, and the winning side is paid ₱400 less the commission. Where the sides are unequal, the call changes: the doblado call compared with parehas shows what happens when one pusta is double the other.
| Pusta on bird A | Pusta on bird B | Total in play | Paid to the winning side before commission |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₱200 | ₱200 | ₱400 | ₱400 |
| ₱100 | ₱100 | ₱200 | ₱200 |
What the law leaves out of a pusta
A pusta is the stake on the fight itself, and nothing else may be wagered on site.
| Provision | What it says about stakes |
|---|---|
| Presidential Decree 449, section 5(f) | No gambling of any kind on the premises during cockfights |
| Presidential Decree 449, section 8 | Penalties for violations |
| Presidential Decree 449, section 4(c) | Bet taker deducts a certain commission, with no rate stated; the rate comes from the local ordinance |
Executive Order No. 9 suspends online, remote or off-cockpit wagering on live cockfights and keeps traditional cockfights licensed under existing laws outside the suspension. The 2022 executive order on e-sabong sets out its text, and it is the page to read before any question about where a pusta may lawfully be laid.
