What Scatter symbol actually means
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Term | Scatter symbol |
| In one line | A symbol of the kind that pays or triggers a feature irrespective of its landing spot. |
| Fixed by | The game studio, in the paytable |
| Where you meet it | The feature list of a game, usually beside free spins |
A scatter does not have to be on a payline, which sets it apart from regular symbols. A stated number of them landing anywhere on the grid typically brings a feature round, usually free spins, and now and then a direct payout too. Each game fixes how many are needed, and the paytable states it instead of any convention.
A worked example
Free spins that trigger on three scatters at a fixed per-spin probability are exactly as likely on spin 201, after 200 spins without one, as they were on spin one. Having no memory of the drought, the machine also lacks any mechanism that would allow one.
The common misreading
Many believe that scatters become ‘due’ following a dry run. They do not. Because every spin is independent, waiting a long time since the last trigger does not shift the probability of the next one. This belief, the gambler’s fallacy applied to a specific symbol, is what keeps players chasing a feature that is no nearer than it was an hour ago.

Using it in practice
Even among games that look identical otherwise, the number of scatters needed and their award differ, and the paytable shows both. A check costs you nothing and forestalls the commonest misreading of a spin result.
Scatter symbol is one of the terms that run through this site’s game pages; where a studio has not published the figure behind such a term, the page says as much instead of using a number from a comparison site. That explains the blanks found in several spec tables here.
