A quinella is a bet that two horses you name will finish first and second in one race, in either order. If you back horses 3 and 7 and they finish 7 then 3, a quinella pays, while an exact-order ticket on 3 then 7 loses; that gap is the whole difference between the two bets. The rest of this page counts what the gap does to combinations. For a view that starts from prices, begin with what a bookmaker does with odds.

What a quinella needs to happen

The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s horse racing betting guide gives the plainest definitions, and they work as a comparison set. Each club’s rules govern its own pools, so read the pool’s name as that club’s wording.

Bet (HKJC wording)What must happenOrder counts
Quinella1st and 2nd in any orderNo
Quinella PlaceAny two of the first three, in any orderNo
Forecast1st and 2nd in correct orderYes
Trio1st, 2nd and 3rd in any orderNo
Tierce1st, 2nd and 3rd in correct orderYes

Philracom’s table has a Forecast with the same exact-order meaning, a P 5.00 minimum, and a Trifecta for the first three in exact order. Its Daily Quinella is different, and the next section shows how.

Exacta: the exact-order version

Exacta is the customary name for the bet in which you must name the first horse and the second horse in the order they finish. It is the same idea as the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Forecast and Philracom’s Forecast (FC), which is why those two bodies do not use the word. If your ticket reads horse 3 first and horse 7 second, only that result pays.

The two tickets, set against the same pair of horses, behave like this:

3 first, 7 secondWinsWins
7 first, 3 secondWinsLoses
3 first, 5 secondLosesLoses

Quinella and exacta combinations compared

Counting is simple arithmetic. In a field of n horses, an exacta has n x (n-1) possible results and a quinella has half as many, because 3-7 and 7-3 count as one.

Horses in the raceExacta resultsQuinella combinations
63015
85628
109045
1213266

Fewer combinations means each one is usually held by more tickets, so a quinella tends to split its returned money among more winners than an exact-order bet on the same finish. That is a pool effect, not a promise about any race: the dividend depends on what was staked in that pool.

How the quinella pool pays

Pari-mutuel dividends come from a shared pool. The Hong Kong Jockey Club pays out 82.5% of the Quinella pool and 80.5% of the Forecast pool as dividends, per its guide. Republic Act 8407 and Republic Act 11649, the two Philippine franchise laws saved here, name the quinella (spelled quenella in RA 8407) among the bets whose dividends come from 82% of the total wager funds.

An example with round numbers chosen for the arithmetic, using the franchise laws’ 82%: a quinella pool of P 50,000 returns P 41,000. If 10 equal tickets hold the winning pair, each ticket gets P 4,100; if 41 do, each gets P 1,000. Tax on winnings and breakage then apply under the franchise terms.

Philracom’s Daily Quinella is a two-race bet with a P 2.00 minimum: first and second in any order, in both races. That makes it a different animal from a one-race quinella. For the three-horse exact-order step up, read the trifecta bet explained, and for racing bodies and venues, horse racing in the Philippines.

Where quinella thinking stops

A quinella is a pool bet on finishing places, and it has no line, spread or total:

FeatureQuinellaSpread or total bet
What you nameTwo horsesA side, or over or under a number
How it paysShare of a poolPrice agreed when you bet
Needs a lineNoYes

That separates it from middling on a point spread, which needs two lines on one game, and from how totals betting settles a score, where the number is a threshold the final score lands above or below. FAQ

What is a quinella bet?

A bet that two chosen horses will finish first and second in the same race, in either order. The Hong Kong Jockey Club defines its Quinella as 1st and 2nd in any order in a race.

What is the difference between a quinella and an exacta?

Order. A quinella accepts both orders of the two horses; an exacta accepts only the order you named. Because the quinella covers two results, each quinella combination is usually held by more tickets.

Does Philracom sell an exacta?

Philracom's bet table does not use the word exacta. Its Forecast (FC) is the first and second place finishers in exact order of arrival, with a P 5.00 minimum, and its Daily Quinella (DQ) is a two-race bet with a P 2.00 minimum.

Is a Daily Quinella the same as a quinella?

No. Philracom's Daily Quinella asks for the first and second placed in any order in both of two designated races, which is a different bet from a single-race quinella.

Ano ang pinagkaiba ng quinella sa forecast?

Sa quinella, kahit alin ang mauna sa dalawang kabayo, panalo ka. Sa forecast o exacta, dapat eksakto ang pagkakasunod.
