DAILYJILI NBA Betting Odds: Spread, Moneyline and Total Read

NBA betting odds usually show three numbers per game: a spread that handicaps the favourite, a moneyline price on the outright winner and a total for the combined score.

  1. Reading NBA betting odds as three markets
  2. NBA spread: the handicap on the favourite
  3. NBA moneyline: the outright winner
  4. NBA total: the combined score
  5. Checking a price before you stake

NBA betting odds put three questions to you at once: who wins, by how much, and how many points the two teams score together. Each question has its own number and its own price. The invented game below, Team A against Team B, shows how to read all three, and every figure on this page is an example, never a real line.

A bookmaker quotes these numbers and keeps a margin in them, which is why the prices never sum to exactly even. This page covers the reading; no number here is an odds feed.

Reading NBA betting odds as three markets

Here is the example board for one imagined game. The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council’s glossary supplies the wording for the spread, the money line and the over/under, and it is that regulator’s wording about its own state’s sportsbooks.

MarketExample lineWhat you are predicting
SpreadTeam A minus 5.5, Team B plus 5.5The winning margin against a handicap
MoneylineTeam A minus 200, Team B plus 170The outright winner
TotalOver 214.5, Under 214.5The combined score of both teams

The glossary says nothing specific to basketball, and the Tennessee council is not a source for the NBA. The league’s own rules and schedule are not quoted on this page.

NBA spread: the handicap on the favourite

The glossary defines a point spread as the predicted scoring differential between two teams. The favourite gives points, the underdog takes them, and a bet on either side is settled after the handicap is applied.

With Team A minus 5.5, Team A has to win by 6 or more for a bet on it to win. A bet on Team B plus 5.5 wins if Team B wins outright or loses by 5 or fewer. The half point means the game cannot land exactly on the line.

  1. Team A wins by 8: Team A minus 5.5 wins, Team B plus 5.5 loses.
  2. Team A wins by 5: Team A minus 5.5 loses, Team B plus 5.5 wins.
  3. Team B wins by 2: Team B plus 5.5 wins, and so does a bet on Team B alone.

NBA moneyline: the outright winner

The glossary describes a money line wager as a wager on the outcome outright, with fixed odds in relation to the amount wagered. The margin does not matter. Only the winner does.

In American format a minus price is the stake needed to win 100, and a plus price is the profit on a stake of 100. In the example, Team A at minus 200 asks 200 to win 100, and Team B at plus 170 pays 170 on a stake of 100.

The same prices can be shown as decimal odds, where the return per 1 staked includes the stake. The conversions below are arithmetic on round example numbers, not a sourced table.

American priceDecimal workingDecimal oddsShare implied
Minus 2001 + 100 / 2001.50200 / 300 = 66.7 percent
Plus 1701 + 170 / 1002.70100 / 270 = 37.0 percent
Minus 1101 + 100 / 1101.91110 / 210 = 52.4 percent

Add the first two shares and you get 103.7 percent. The 3.7 over 100 is the margin built into the pair, the same mechanism the glossary calls the vigorish when it describes a 110 stake to win 100.

NBA total: the combined score

The glossary calls the over/under, or total, a bet on whether the aggregate score will be over or under a particular number. In the example the number is 214.5, so a final score of 110 to 105 makes 215, and Over wins.

Final scoreCombinedOver 214.5
110 to 105215Wins
104 to 100204Loses
Totals betting and how a score on the line settles covers whole-number totals, where a bet can be returned.

A spread bet and a total bet on the same game are separate wagers that can be placed on opposite sides. When the lines of one market change between two bets, an opening exists that middling and the two-bet window explains with its own examples.

Checking a price before you stake

Read the line on the bet slip, not on any page that describes it. The DAILYJILI lobby has a Sports tab with two vendors in its filter, and its prices and limits show on the bet slip after login; this page quotes none of them. Compare a margin if you wish, by converting both sides to percentages as above.

  1. Open the Sports tab after logging in and add a market to the slip.
  2. Read the price on both sides of the same market.
  3. Convert each price to a percentage and add them; anything above 100 is the margin.
  4. Read the stake limit before you confirm.

Pool-based racing bets work differently, because there is no quoted price. Compare this with karera betting and its pool payouts or a trifecta bet explained simply.

FAQ

What does a minus sign mean in NBA betting odds?

Beside a spread, minus marks the favourite, the team that must win by more than the number. Beside a moneyline price it means the amount you must stake to win 100, so minus 150 asks 150 to win 100. The sign carries a different meaning in each place.

What is the difference between the NBA spread and the NBA moneyline?

The spread bets on the margin of victory, while the moneyline bets only on who wins. A team can win the game and still fail to cover its spread. A moneyline bet on that team would be paid.

Do NBA odds from different bookmakers match?

Not always. Each bookmaker sets its own price and margin, so the same game can carry slightly different numbers. Read the price on the bet slip at the moment you stake, not a number from a page.

Can this page tell me today's NBA lines?

No. This site publishes no live odds, tips or picks. Every team and number here is an invented example, and real lines are only on a bookmaker's own bet slip.

How do I turn American odds into a percentage?

For a minus price, divide the stake by the stake plus 100: minus 150 gives 150 divided by 250, which is 60 percent. For a plus price, divide 100 by the price plus 100: plus 130 gives 100 divided by 230, about 43.5 percent. Those two add to more than 100 percent, and the surplus is the bookmaker's margin.
